The short answer: yes — growing red sandalwood on your own land is legal. Cultivation of Pterocarpus santalinus on private patta land is permitted in Andhra Pradesh and most Indian states, and is actively encouraged as plantation farming in the species' natural Prakasam–Nellore habitat. What the law tightly controls is not the growing — it is the felling, transport and sale of the timber.

What is legal without special permission

What requires government permission

This strict regulation is also why legal supply stays scarce — one of the reasons grade-A timber commands the benchmark rates set out in AP GO No. 256/2015.

The one habit that makes harvest easy: register early

Growers are well advised to register the plantation with the forest department soon after planting and keep records (land documents, sapling purchase, geo-tagged tree counts). Documented origin is what distinguishes legal plantation timber from protected wild timber — and it makes the felling and transit permissions after 12–15 years far smoother.

What Bhoo Vasista plot owners should know

In a managed venture like Bhoo Vasista, the land is registered in the buyer's name while Shanmug Group manages the plantation lifecycle — including the harvest-time processes — under the cultivation agreement, with returns shared 60/40. Before signing any farm-plot agreement (ours included), check that it clearly states who obtains the felling, transit and sale permissions and how the sale proceeds are computed and audited.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Forest regulations differ by state and change over time — verify the current position with the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department and review your agreement with a qualified professional before investing.
