How many red sandalwood trees per acre?
The short answer: at the standard 10×10 ft spacing, one acre holds about 420 red sandalwood trees once you allow for internal paths and borders (the pure grid maximum is ~435). Plantations that prefer thicker individual trees use 12×12 ft spacing at roughly 300 trees per acre.
Spacing options at a glance
| Spacing | Trees / acre (approx.) | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 10×10 ft | ~420 | Standard: maximum count, good girth with drip + maintenance |
| 12×12 ft | ~300 | Fewer trees, more canopy room and girth per tree |
| 8×8 ft | ~600 | Dense; usually thinned later — more management effort |
Trees per plot size
Farm-plot ventures sell in cents (1 cent = 48.4 sq yd). At 10×10 ft spacing:
| Plot size | Area | Trees |
|---|---|---|
| 11 cents | 532 sq yd | 45+ |
| 22 cents | 1,064 sq yd (~133 × 72 ft) | 90+ |
| Half acre | 2,420 sq yd | ~210 |
| 1 acre | 4,840 sq yd | ~420 |

What one acre can yield
A well-maintained tree gives about 50–70 kg of heartwood after 12–15 years. Across ~420 trees, that is on the order of 21–29 tonnes per acre of gradeable heartwood — which is why per-acre economics of red sandalwood differ so much from ordinary timber crops. Value then depends on grade: see our price guide (per kg, per tree, per tonne).
Why year 10 is too early
Heartwood — the red, dense core that carries almost all the value — forms mainly from year 8 onwards. A tree cut at year 10 holds only part of its potential yield, which is why serious plantations (including Bhoo Vasista) plan a 12–15 year cycle: the last years add the most valuable wood.
What affects the count and the yield
- Soil and habitat — the Eastern Ghats belt of Prakasam–Nellore is the species' natural home; red, well-drained soils favour heartwood formation.
- Irrigation — drip lines through the establishment years set root systems that sustain later growth.
- Protection — fencing, CCTV and, at maturity, geo-tagging matter because mature trees are valuable enough to need real security.
